Part One of the John Ellis Photograph Collection
Approx.12,000 images,1971- 1996 reside in the University of Melbourne Archives. The collection is fully annotated on a data base with names, dates and events. Many of these images have been used in various publications and documentaries.
Included in the collection are events about the sacking of the Whitlam Government, marches against the Kennett Government's industrial policies, the Maritime Union of Australia dispute, support for an independent East Timor, delegation of British child migrants to parliament, Nelson Mandela's visit to Melbourne and images of Australian security police attending peaceful rallies. There are many images of a month long stay in Cuba with a work brigade and a six month stay in New York in 1996.
Part One of the John Ellis Photograph Collection was acquired by the UMA in 1999, Part Two in 2008 and Part Three in 2015. A selection of one thousand images from Part One have been digitised and put on the UMA website.

John Ellis Political Activism Collection: (First section)
Consists of material collected, such as leaflets, programs, correspondence and booklets. These are held by the UMA.
The Museum of Australian Democracy Eureka, Ballarat, used some of the Aboriginal material in an exhibition early 2014.
Printing Industry Collection:
Small collection of printing industry books, a type case, stereo blocks, Linotype and Fotosetter matrices and type. Photographs of printing museums- Armidale, Penrith and Melbourne.
A Working Life (2012)- A booklet written by John about working in the printing industry: apprenticeship years, newspaper composing rooms, Herald Weekly Times Ltd, Herald Gravure Printers, overseas scholarship to investigate new technology in typesetting, jobs done for left activist groups.
A selection of printing industry material was donated to the State Library of Victoria in 2015.
Badges: 2011: Donated 201 items to the Museum of Australian Democracy,
Canberra, including 185 badges, photographed and catalogued.
Posters: Hundreds of posters catalogued, photographed, deposited at UMA.
